Ever heard the saying, follow your heart where it leads you? I’ve always thought there was something wrong with that statement. Why? Because I’ve seen how easily swayed the heart can be. I have heard what it tells me to do and most of the times, those things are unpleasant to say out loud.
What did your heart tell you to do today?
I’ll tell you what my heart tells me when I see someone. I find myself unconsciously condemning something the person does or their looks and even trying to rate myself better than them. Or sometimes, it tells me that I am not up to their standard. I find myself being led to use my body in ways that are displeasing to God just because it’s pleasurable to me. But I know this is not who I want to be calling the shots in my life. It is too unreliable. I do not want a leader who is easily swayed by voices, constantly pulled in different directions at the same time.
Your heart can love someone today and hate the person the next day. Situations, opinions from people amongst other things are voices that sway your heart back and forth, leaving you confused most of the times. That’s what we will be addressing today – Your Heart as the foundation of your life and why you should guard your heart.

Your Life is Formed from the contents of Your Heart – Follow your Heart or Nah?
In case you didn’t know, please hear it now. Your heart is the core of who you are. That’s where your life is shaped from. Even God himself knows this which is why He looks at the state of your heart and not your actions. This simply means if your heart is not right, your actions are displeasing to God regardless of how good and innocent they might appear to those around you. So, I guess the big question is, How do you know when your heart is not right?
Jesus said, By their fruit, you shall know them. What fruit [actions] do you produce [show forth]? Whatever fruit your heart yields is as a result of what’s been planted. Your heart is the soil that gives life to the seed. It holds the seed while it grows and as you keep feeding it with sources that give it life, the seed planted will keep growing until it becomes a full plant bearing fruits [actions]. So, if you want to know why you act the way you do, check your seed.
What’s the Seed and How does it get into Your Heart?
Now, that’s a good question to ask. There’s a saying that goes, “you are what you eat.” I couldn’t agree more. You are indeed what you eat. Now, I don’t mean the food you know and your physical health. I mean what you feed your heart with. I already mentioned that Your heart is the foundation of your life, which means that you [your actions] build upon your thoughts which are already there as a result of what you let in through your senses [eyes and ears majorly].
We live in times where our carelessness is costing us our lives. How does one sit in the middle of the road expect not to get crushed by an oncoming vehicle? That’s the very thing that happens in our lives. We let anything walk into our hearts and then those things end up dominating our thought life and keep us from hearing God’s voice. So, What do you feed your heart with? Pornography, the Word of God, latest gossip, entertainment of all sorts or something else? Whatever it is, I think it is fair to let you know that you are controlled by what you let your eyes and ears feast on.
Funny enough, some of these things we have given our eyes and ears to have, is convinced that we are on the right track. There’s nothing wrong with a little “entertainment” or “self-love” every now and then. That sound familiar? We should know that our decision is never really our own. They are usually influenced by what we choose to let in through the doors of our heart. Until you start to pay attention to the kind of food you feed your heart, you stand at a great risk.
Look Within – Follow Your Heart or Nah?
We have to dig deep into our hearts, with each of us being sincere to ourselves. The state of your heart is what matters to God. Severally throughout the scriptures, God never made reference to works but to the heart. Are you part of those whose lips praise him but have their hearts far from Him? We were created for His pleasure and if He isn’t pleased with your sacrifice [your life], it isn’t something you should ignore. You’re actually dying by your own hand, letting in the devil through the little holes your careless acts keep poking in the doors of your heart.
Do you still think that it is wise to follow your heart? Personally, I have been bruised many times before because I let my unstable heart lead me. Your heart can only be stable and your decisions trusted at least when you are led by the Holy Spirit. You need the Holy Spirit because He is the one who knows the heart of the father enough to want to teach you about it. He is a patient teacher and is willing to help shine the light on the content of your heart. Only then can you know what you are really up against and how to take captive of those thoughts.
Let the Word of God – the Bible be your bestie. You need to study the Word because it is the only mirror that perfectly reflects the true image of who you are – exposing the contents of your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes so you can see where you have got it wrong.
Restoring Your Heart – The Great Physician
The first step to restoration is first admitting that there is a problem that needs immediate attention. Without the right state of heart, your good works amount to nothing in the sight of God. Look at King Saul. He lost it all because of the unrepentant state of His heart. The Holy Spirit is willing and ready to help anyone who is willing.
The purpose of this blog is to point you to Jesus and encourage you to build a relationship with the Holy Spirit for yourself. This is an individual race and you need to go all in. Don’t put one leg in and one leg out. Open your heart so He can shine the light on the faults in your heart and help you grow to perfection. If you are not saved yet [accepting Jesus as Lord over your life], I honestly don’t know what’s holding you back but He’s calling to you to come and rest in Him. Let Him save you and create a clean heart for you. Remember, sin thrives in secrecy. Let’s come to Him so He can teach us to guard our hearts.
We’d talk about practical steps on how to guard your heart in our next blog.
