Do you ever hear voices in your head telling you to do things? I know I hear voices. Sometimes, it gets so loud in my head that I feel as though I’m going crazy and I can’t help but cry. It’s usually worse when I have an important decision to make. That’s when they all rise up, each wanting to have controlling power. I know you hear voices too.
Every day we live, there are things, situations and people calling for our attention. It gets confusing when they all start to speak at the same time, each presenting contradictory opinions. These things become voices in our heads, screaming at us as they try to convince us to go their own way. Those voices you hear are what we are going to be addressing today. It’s important to figure out where they come from, how they are there and which to follow. Until you are accurately able to discern the voice to pay heed to, you will keep going in circles. Let’s get started then.
Whose Voice Do You Hear? – I Hear Voices
Depression, anger, bitterness, jealousy, hatred, love, impatience, peace, patience, joy amongst others are fruits of whichever voice you hear and obey. So whose voice do you hear? Whose do you obey?
Just recently, I did a Facebook post series on the heart. You can read the posts here. It’s important you know that God never intended for the heart to lead us. Your heart is not a leader rather it is a soil that gives life to whatever seed you sow into it. More like your thoughts which is the voice of your heart take the pattern of whatever seed you feed it with. The seeds could be; doubt, fear, anger, inferiority complex, jealousy, pride, lust and several others. It’s the sources of these seeds we are going to be talking about right now.
I have categorized them into three; The voice of your heart, the voice of others and Voice of the Spirit. These are very real voices that speak to us each day, influencing our actions. By their fruits produced and evidently manifesting in your life, you’d know which voice leads you. Usually, there are two sides to this – the negative and the positive. The negative is what I’d like to focus on for the purpose of this post.
The Voice of Others.
Do you constantly feel depressed? One moment you are happy and the next you are hearing voices telling you that you are not worth it? Do you feel frustrated more than half of the time and sometimes have suicidal thoughts? Then, you don’t need to look any further. You are letting the voice of others influence your thoughts and actions. That is unhealthy and most certainly not God’s will for your life.
We all have friends, family, and well-wishers who love to be kept in the loop of happenings in our lives but don’t you think they are sometimes part of the problem. I mean, most of them have good intentions (or they think they do) but in the multitude of their words, they can sometimes lead you astray. Let’s give 2 instances. The parent who feel they know what’s best for you so they ask you to go study medicine when it’s so obvious that you are art-inclined. They have good intentions but that’s not where God wants you to be so out of wanting to please them, you go to school and keep struggling in a place that you are not even meant to be in the first place.

Here’s another scenario.
There are those who think they know you better than you know yourself and so they keep chipping off your self-esteem bit by bit with their abusive words. They make you feel as though you are absolutely nothing without them and because you believe them, you start to depend so much on their opinions, letting it lead you. Their abusive words become music to your ears.
So, each time you are about to do something worthwhile [make an important decision], you keep hearing the words, “You are not good enough. You are useless. You will never amount to anything without me…” play in your head and hinder you from putting in your very best or engaging in it at all.Instead of seeing yourself as you were created, you start seeing yourself through their eyes, waiting for their approval for each step you want to take.
There are still some others who have been stuck in challenging situations for so long that they have lost hope and given in to situations to determine their actions. All these are voices we have let determine who we should be. Thus we find that we are constantly frustrated and angry at everyone. Take for instance the unemployed youths who sit around blaming the FG and everyone else for not producing more jobs, letting the inadequacy of the Federal government determine their outcome in life.
The Voice of Your Heart
Now, here’s a tricky one. You have probably heard this before, “Follow your heart wherever it leads you…” The problem with this is this: How do you follow something that is so unstable, ever-changing and tossed around by trends? The voice of your heart – your thoughts, is usually influenced by that you let in through the doors of your heart.
The seed sown here is usually in form of conversations, movies, videos of all sorts, music, and all other information passed filtered in through your eyes and ears. Those movies, books and all the information you let into your heart are speaking to you and dictating how your life should go. What you perceive with your senses speak to you and they are part of the problem as well. Check your daily schedule, evaluate for yourself what you lend your eyes and ears to daily.
The Voice of the Spirit – The Word
This is the most important yet the most ignored voice. It is usually drowned by all the other voices and activities. Most of us desperately want to hear it but we are not willing to pay the price for hearing it. God speaks to you every other day and He wants to speak every time but you can’t hear because your heart is tuned elsewhere.
The only price to pay is to exchange your time for His Word. Just pick up your Bible and study. Simple, right? Yet it’s so hard. Someone may say, “Where do I find the time to do all these and still go about my daily routine?” Ever heard the saying, Where your treasure is, there your heart lies? That’s just an answer to your question. What you deem as important is something you will do without being cajoled to do so. For instance, you know that if you do not go to work, you won’t get paid so you strive to go, yeah? It’s the same thing. If you do not make out time daily to spend time with God, studying His Word, you can’t and won’t hear Him and you will keep being pulled in different directions.

Here’s my testimony
I never saw any use studying the Word of God because I assumed it was boring. Why would I want to give up movies, time with friends, social media time, makeup hour and all the other things I found more pleasurable for boredom? That’s how I thought of it until the day my phone got stolen. My whole world crashed that day. I didn’t realize how much importance I was giving to that phone and how much it was taking from me.
For the first time in years, I opened my Bible. I saw things differently. The excitement got me to keep going. Even after I got a new phone, I couldn’t stop reading it. Then I attended a program held annually called Sozo. It was right there on the floor that I heard God speak to me very clearly. He said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you…”
This may come off as odd to you – hearing His voice clearly. Trust me, it was awkward but I felt peace. That’s something I hadn’t felt in a long while. I didn’t even know it was in the Bible till I saw it 3 weeks later while I was studying my bible. It was only then that I realized that the proper place to hear from God is in the place of studying His Word. That is the only way to accurately discern God’s voice.
Whose Voice should you follow? – I hear voices
God wants to speak to you through His Word but you can only hear Him if you choose to give Him your attention. There is a lot He has to say to you and trust me, it is different from what other voices are saying. I learned something vital this morning. Jesus gave His life for you, giving you an undeserved privilege to enter into an intimate relationship with God.
Do you know God lives inside of you and He wants to speak to you every day?
This isn’t a hoax. It is the truth. If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord, you should do that. It’s no point living life pulled in different directions. You can have the Holy Spirit directing you, never trying to put you down but building you up in every way. The only way to hear the Voice of the Spirit is the Word of God. That’s what we are going to be discussing next: Discerning and Obeying His Voice.
I implore you to take out time and evaluate yourself. Do an in-house cleanup. Pray to Jesus to have His way in your life so you can begin to hear Him and enjoy sweet fellowship with Him. He is the only one who’d never leave you nor forsake you.
