A year is almost passing out while another is about unfolding. For me, the end of a year and the near-birth of a new one makes me really reflect. How would you say the year 2017 has been for you? And if you continue the way you did this year, are you confident that you will be excited about the results you will have a year from now? In the course of this year, I noticed that a lot of people and sometimes myself pulled out the “I’m busy” card. But really, what were you busy doing? Are you busy building something or nothing?
I have met so many people who are really busy. From afar when you see them, you can tell that they are busy building something. However, as you get closer, you start to notice that though they are indeed building blocks, none of those blocks are on top the other. The same set of people would rather keep themselves occupied. To them, it’s a sin to sit down and do nothing. Which is what I’d like to talk about today.
Are You Busy Building with Something or Nothing?
The truth is that it is not a bad thing to build blocks but what structure are you trying to build? I mean, those blocks are supposed to be laid on each other to form a structure. It is important to know what structure you are planning to build with the blocks you are making. I should mention that the blocks are those little steps we take to get to where we are supposed to be. The structure is the bigger picture – your dream, just the way God has laid it in your heart. If you don’t have a clear goal yet, I want you to know that it is better to start with a clear goal in mind. If you don’t, you just might end up crashing on the way because you didn’t think it through.
You should be able to ask yourself, what am I doing? Am I just busy building blocks or have I started putting the structure together? How do these steps you are taking add up to the vision God has laid in your heart? Some people actually see waiting as laziness – a period where you just sit and do nothing. And they would rather keep running than wait because to them, waiting is a sin.
My message to you today is that though it’s very important not to be lazy, success is as a result of great planning. Waiting is not laziness – you sitting around doing nothing. Nope! You plan while you wait, you plan! In waiting, you clarify the goal and then plan. It’d go a long way in determining if you are busy building something or nothing. Many people that you see succeeding today didn’t start out with a clear goal in mind. Ask around and you will hardly find anyone that just stumbled on success. Yes, they may stumble on a strategy or tactics of making better results, strategic planning and having a goal must be one of the first things that they start with.
How Do You Pursue Your Vision? – Busy Building Something or Nothing?
Now, if your year has been great and you don’t mind repeating exactly what you did this year in the new year, then you can stop reading at this point but if you want a better year – you want to be able to pursue your dream in the new year with clarity and focus, then you need to take the following steps:
Take Charge, Don’t Just Go with The Flow
It’s important to understand what’s going on around you so that when opportunities come, you can take advantage of them. However, you don’t just keep waiting – sitting down and hoping that something is going to happen. Start doing something!!! Some people say they are “trusting God for somebody – their helper to come”, but the truth of the matter is that many people that help, won’t help you for just sitting down and doing nothing. They won’t help you just waiting around hoping that something will happen. They want to see you that you are actually serious. So, you must get working while trusting God for the best.
Take It Easy, Be Driven but Take Caution
It’s possible to be so driven that you’re not paying attention to important details like taking care of yourself, caring for those around you or even taking advantage of the opportunities that are around you. Pursuing your goal shouldn’t be a reason to let go of yourself. You must get to the point where you are not intoxicated with trying to achieve, that you are unable to enjoy each day as it comes. Take it easy, take caution and take care of yourself. Take care of the people in your life. Be in the life of the people around you. Don’t just cut them off and say you are pursuing a goal. Take advantage of each day that comes because it’s never going to come back again.
Take Time to Plan, Don’t Just Hope
When it comes to taking time to plan, the first thing I’d say is that you need to start with what you have right now. Don’t go planning more than your status at the moment. As much as we like to think that it is possible to achieve something huge within a short space of time, it just might be possible only in your dreams. Start from where you are. As I thought about what to share with you here, a thought came to my mind. Where I am today is as a result of my decisions up till today. Now, if I am at this point and I have so much success, then I should be thanking God because some of the decisions that I have made in the past have brought me to this point.
However, if I lack so many things, equally, I must realize that some of my decisions have brought me here. And I must be able to acknowledge that and accept it so that I can start to build from the real point where I am. Honestly, if you are not willing to start from where you are right now, you will be starting wrong and you may just end up wasting time. So, for you to start right, you need to acknowledge where you are and start from there.
The next thing to do is to ask yourself, “where do I want to get to?”
What’s the end goal that I desire? Am I building something or nothing?” Are you just hoping that something good will come out? If you are, that’s not a good goal. Your goals must be concrete, measurable, realistic and timebound. You should do it this way. For instance, it will be nice to set specific things you want to have completed by the end of January, say read 2 books, start a blog or just anything you know is relevant to where you are headed. As you do this, you will see that you’re getting yourself ready for a better year. Finally, what are you willing to say No to in order to be able to say Yes to what God designed you for? If you can focus on getting your priorities right, I can guarantee you that you are going to have a better year.
Before I Wrap This Up
I would love to invite you to join us for Ready Set Impact, at the Purpose University Online. This course is designed to help turn your ideas into realities. And it is free!!! However, it will cost you time to go through the classes but that shouldn’t be a problem. If you really want a better year you must invest extra time and resources than most people do, especially if you really want it. I believe that God has put something in the heart of each person reading this today and even those who aren’t reading this. You need to put your mind to it and put yourself into this process of getting ready to launch out what God has put in your heart.
The course is supposed to help you, first of all, find out what it is – how do you clarify and identify those ideas that God has given you and then how do you know who you are set to impact?
